Adasina has received many media requests for our team’s thoughts about the news of the potential SCOTUS decision. Below is our current statement. Journalists may reference and quote from the statement.
On the SCOTUS Roe News
Although the leaked document described in yesterday’s report is authentic, it does not represent a decision by the Court, or the final position of any member in regards to the overturning of Roe vs. Wade. What we do know is that if the ruling is overturned, the additional reductions in access to safe and legal abortion will directly harm countless women and birthing people across the country – especially those living in poverty – a group who are disproportionately people of color. Access to reproductive healthcare, including safe and legal abortion, is an issue of gender justice, economic justice, and racial justice. And the right to bodily autonomy is one of basic human dignity.
Does the (potential) SCOTUS Ruling Affect Our Social Justice Investing Strategy
At Adasina our investment strategy is designed to address intersectional social issues in alignment with ongoing, and new, social justice concerns.
We develop public equity strategies by starting with the Adasina Social Justice Index (JUSTICE). In this index we currently use 64 different portfolio metrics (or “ways of measuring”) that we call our comprehensive Social Justice Investment Criteria; these metrics address issues at the intersection of racial, gender, economic, and climate justice. We have always included reproductive rights in our investment criteria, resulting in divestment from companies that donate disproportionately to anti-choice politicians, and companies that influence policy negatively for women and reproductive freedoms. Furthermore, we are a proud member of an investors and advocacy coalition (Don’t Ban Equality) that is tracking the corporate response to the potential withdrawal of abortion rights.
Additional Information
Adasina stands in solidarity with the social justice organizations that are fighting for everyone’s right to safe and legal abortion. If the draft proves to be the opinion of the majority of the Courts, we would hope that the justices heed the widespread public outcry and issue a ruling that strongly supports safe and legal abortion. For additional context on our approach to the intersection of reproductive rights and investing in public equities, please see the full statement about how Adasina addressed Texas Senate Bill 8 (SB8) with our social justice partners.
